Beltsville Test Varroa

Beltsville # Test This sheet describes a simple test (a variation of the USDA Beltsville method) to check if varroa mites are resistant to Apistan.

NB.

Apistan resistant mites will almost invariably be cross-resistant to Bayvarol 1.

Cut a 9mm x 25mm piece from an Apistan strip and staple it #, Beltsville Apistan/Coumaphos double test This test can be used to determine mite resistance when a beehive doesn’t appear to respond to chemical mite control measures.

The test uses Apistan and CheckMite+TM strips and can be conducted simultaneously on the same group of colonies by taking two samples from each hive.

Beltsville , Maryland.

This test can be used to determine mite resistance when a beehive doesn’t appear to respond to chemical mite control measures.

It uses fluvalinate (Apistan), amitraz (Apivar) or coumaphos (CheckMite+TM) strips and can test all three products simultaneously on the same group of colonies by taking three samples from each hive.

Since I also can#t test for things like nosema, it just makes sense to me to send some out.

I ran my own tests tonight and, as I suspected, I#m going with varroa mites again.

7 mites per 100 on one hive and 4 per 100 on the other.

It#s funny how you can have two hives right next to each other#, 15/04/2005 New Test on Tap for Detecting Pesticide-Resistant Mites By Jan Suszkiw April 15, 2005.

Commercial apiarists and state bee inspectors now have a fast new way to check Varroa mites for this honeybee parasite’s resistance to the pesticides coumaphos and fluvalinate.

For an additional $680 they will also test pollen samples from 16 hives (8 healthy hives and 8 crashing hives) for 170 pesticides.

After the free disease and parasite tests are complete at the Beltsville Bee Lab, they will send you and your apiary inspector a diagnosis report.
